Tell Me More About Ongoing Costs
Your domain name is your website’s address — for example, yourbusiness.co.nz. You need one so customers can find you online. It’s registered in your name and typically costs around $30 a year.
There are many agencies that will sell you the annual registration, and they’re all much the same, at around $30. We include the first year’s registration in the $580 you pay. After that, you’ll just receive a renewal notice once a year from your domain provider.
Hosting is simply where your website lives online. Think of your domain as your street address, and hosting as the land your website sits on.
For a simple small-business website, there’s no reason for hosting and domain costs to suddenly become expensive. There are plenty of providers competing for your business, and many hosts provide hosting to small websites (like yours) for free.
We use Cloudflare for hosting where it’s suitable. Cloudflare is a huge global internet company whose network is used by around a fifth of all the websites in the world, and it has offered a free plan for more than 15 years.
If it turns out your site needs some extra bells and whistles, like fancy forms or a database, we might need to move to a paid host, at around $60 a year. You’re not likely to need that, and we certainly wouldn’t build your site that way without your permission.
In short: your ongoing website costs will be less than the cost of a cup of coffee once a month.
